Who is Hunter Biden, anyway?
Posted September 26, 2023
As it happens in courtrooms all across the country, defendants often agree to a plea deal. They’ll plead guilty to a reduced charge in exchange for less prison time, probation, community service, restitution, and/or other terms to resolve a case and avoid a trial. This is exactly the circumstance Hunter Biden found himself in after Federal investigators, prosecutors, and defense lawyers sought to put this 5-years-long case behind them. However, a Federal judge, appointed by Trump, crumbled to political pressure from Congressional Republicans and tossed out the so-called ‘sweetheart deal’ for the President’s son. He’s now under indictment for the same charges he’s already plead guilty to. Why? Republicans want to muddy the political waters for Joe Biden’s 2024 run.

So, who is Hunter Biden, anyway? The President’s son comes to mind first. He’s also a prominent lawyer (Georgetown University and Yale Law School grad), was counsel to Boies, Schiller & Flexner LLP, a famous law firm in New York; co-founder and a managing partner of the investment advisory company Rosemont Seneca Partners; chairman of the Board of the World Food Programme USA, which offers food and educational assistance to 300 million malnourished children in developing countries; and he’s a member of the bar in the State of Connecticut, the District of Columbia, the U.S. Supreme Court, and the Court of Federal Claims.

He appeared on the world stage when he was hired by Burisma Holdings, a private gas company in Ukraine, in May 2014, as director of the legal unit “to provide support for the Company among international organizations.” Republican critics claimed he wasn’t qualified for the job, that he only got hired because his father, as Vice President, pulled some strings. Here’s a quote from Burisma Holdings Press Release, dateline London, 12 May, 2014:

“Mr. Biden has experience in public service and foreign policy. He is a director for the U.S. Global Leadership Coalition, The Center for National Policy, and the Chairman’s Advisory Board for the National Democratic Institute. Having served as a Senior Vice President at MBNA bank, former U.S. President Bill Clinton appointed him an Executive Director of E-Commerce Policy Coordination under Secretary of Commerce William Daley.”

Critics be silenced, but it turns out Hunter Biden has a character flaw: addiction. After his brother died in 2015, he relapsed and went off the rails. He admits his addiction cost him his marriage, his home, his dignity, yet he managed to maintain his business life and stay out of legal trouble. Nonetheless, he burned through some $200K a month on booze and drugs, luxury hotels and cars, loose women and thieving friends. However, he made two big mistakes. He lied to buy a gun he had for 11 days, and failed to pay taxes on $400K for two years (2017 - 2018). In May of 2019 he sobered up, left Burisma, and by October of 2021, caught up on his taxes to the tune of $2 million in fines and penalties. Still, he broke the law by not paying on time, and because it’s against the law for a drug addict to possess a gun, even though he’d never been convicted of a drug offense, he may do prison time for that, as well. He lied on the application form, checked the box that said he wasn't addicted to drugs or alcohol. What addict admits they have a drug problem? The 2018 investigation into that lie lasted for five years, as investigators had hoped to find something more damning.

They're looking for the smoking gun to prove that Hunter Biden's income from Burisma and a Chinese business man were ill-gotten gains that threatened the security of the United States AND that Joe Biden benefitted from his son's activities. Turns out, Hunter Biden's company, Owasco P.C., in 2017, represented a Chinese oil and natural gas company, CEFC, in its attempt to make a gas deal on Monkey Island in Louisiana, the Hudson West III project, a deal that fell through. Ye Jainming, the CEO of CEFC paid Biden's firm $4.7 million over a period of a year. Republicans claim Hunter Biden's income was questionable because Ye Jainming may have committed fraud somewhere along the line and is now missing in China. Guilty by association?

Now, the House Republicans have opened yet another investigation into the plea deal, looking for special treatment by the DOJ. On top of that, they’ve begun an impeachment inquiry, without probable cause or any evidence, in hopes of finding evidence that links father and son in some illegal business dealings. As there is no evidence of wrongdoing on Joe Biden's part, their goal is to put a cloud over him with the appearance of impropriety to influence voters negatively in the 2024 election.

This is not the first time Hunter Biden has been targeted by Republican partisans to smear Joe Biden. Trump pulled the same stunt during his run for a second term, tried to get Ukraine to ‘claim’ they were investigating Hunter Biden for corruption at Burisma, even though they hadn’t done so nor had any reason to do so. Now, stripped of his plea deal, he faces trial and imprisonment for crimes to which he’s already pled guilty, simply because he's the President's son.

The trial should be a slam-dunk in this pigsty of dirty politics. I can only hope that Americans see this political ploy for what it is and don't drink the muddy water.

Oink! Oink!
