The Grief Syndrome

by

Terry Wright

In 2235, an immortal man, grieving over his wife's death, must put aside his sorrow long enough to rescue a woman from cryonic freeze and prevent the assassination of a councilman.

Love is sorrow. Love is death. Everyone Scott Dunn ever loved is dead: his wife, his children, his grandchildren. Drowning in grief, he swears he'll never get close to anyone else, ever again. But a call for help sends him to Boulder, Colorado where he teams up with a woman and her pet ferret to thwart the assassination of a councilman. It's a journey that will bring him face-to-face with his ultimate fear: losing someone he loves again.

THE COUNCIL OF ELDERS:

Dar Anders and his wife, Ishar, are the oldest couple on the Council of Elders. They occupy the coveted "Chair" and preside over six other distinguished member-couples. While Congress manages the country's domestic concerns, the Council of Elders conduct their affairs in the space arena. At issue, the newly discovered planet of Alpha Ketari, which is rich in ore and mineral deposits desperately needed on Earth.  A vote is on the Council's agenda.

MEET THE BAD GUY:

Jerry Well is a wealthy environmentalist and an immortal, thanks to his longevity formula: Everlife. Problem is, his future is bleak because the earth is overpopulated and gravely short on resources. His only salvation is a pristine planet, Alpha Ketari, where he plans to live with his wife forever in paradise. But the mining conglomerates want to dig it up and ship it to Earth, one freighter-load at a time. To stop them, he devises a plan to take over the Council "Chair" and sway the vote in his favor. First, he must assassinate Dar Anders. If he succeeds, life on Earth will sorely suffer.

MEET THE GIRL:

In 2010, Katherine contracted West Nile B, a virus destined to destroy her brain. Life with her husband, Jerry Well, had been brutal: his controlling lies, the beatings, and the despicable acts behind closed doors. She refused to take his Everlife and live with him forever. Not willing to let her go, Jerry froze her alive. Now, rigid as frosted glass, she's stored in a cryostat, her core temperature minus 320 degrees. She doesn't know that a cure for West Nile B has been discovered, nor that Jerry Well is going to reanimate her. Even in death she has not escaped him.

MEET THE GOOD GUY:

Scott Dunn is also an immortal, and so was his wife until grief drove her to suicide. Blaming Jerry Well for her suffering, Scott arrives in Boulder to  infiltrate Alcor Life Extension Institute and "unplug" Katherine before Jerry can use her in his plot to take over the Council. It's not like killing her, he reasons; after all, she's already dead. But when he realizes Jerry wouldn't have gone through the expense of cryonic internment if the virus had damaged Katherine's brain, Scott decides to rescue her instead. But to succeed, he must team up with a woman and her pet ferret, a venture that will test his mettle and rip out his heart.

AND THEN THERE'S THE VIAL:

There's only one vial of Everlife left on the planet. Jerry Well has saved it for Katherine, but Scott makes off with it when he rescues her. As they race to Washington to foil the plot to assassinate Dar Anders, she falls ill with cryonic relapse. Scott realizes that Everlife is the only thing that can save her.

This is a story of healing, the letting go of sorrow, and the acceptance of loss. Be with someone you love for the nail-biting conclusion.
